BALTIC POWER PROJECT COMPLETES INSTALLATION OF ALL 76 TURBINES. THE FIRST POLISH OFFSHORE WIND FARM IN POLAND ENTERS THE FINAL STAGE BEFORE COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS
Baltic Power project confirmed installation of the last, 76th turbine. This milestone follows the announcement of the first power delivery to the national energy system.
The first offshore wind farm in Poland of up to 1,2 GW capacity consists of 76 15 MW Vestas turbines, the largest and the most advanced model commercially available manufactured by European suppliers. In total the farm will be able to manufacture up to 4TWh of energy, which stands for approximately 3% of current demand for electrical energy in Poland.
The installation of the 76th - the last turbine at the Baltic Power wind farm marks a significant milestone, not only for the Project, but for the entire offshore wind industry in Poland. Declarations and plans turned into the delivered project that supports energy transition of the country and development of the entire new business sector and jobs market. This is a great achievement of all Baltic Power Team. Now, we put every effort to complete the remaining commissioning works and prepare to the launch of the operations phase – comments Maciej Stryjecki, CEO and President of the Management Board of Baltic Power.
Baltic Power was among the first two projects that selected turbines manufactured by Vestas. The blades measure ~115 m and provide over 43 000 m2 swept area (more than 6 football fields). With towers reaching 120 meters tall, the turbine’s total height exceeds 260 meters. Additionally, it was the first project in the world to incorporate sustainably sourced steel in its turbine towers, representing approximately 15% of the steel used in the towers. This steel was produced almost entirely from recycled raw material in an electric arc furnace powered by renewable energy.
Furthermore, over 1/3 of nacelles were manufactured and delivered from the Vestas' factory in Szczecin, Poland, which marks a significant milestone for the development of local expertise at offshore wind industry. Baltic Power was among the first two projects to be sourced by Szczecin-based factory.
Baltic Power demonstrates that Europe has the technology and industrial capability to deliver offshore wind at scale at a time when strengthening energy security is more important than ever. The project is a milestone in several ways, bringing the first offshore wind turbines to the Polish Baltic Sea while also deploying the first nacelles produced at Vestas’ factory in Szczecin. With more than a third of Baltic Power’s nacelles manufactured locally in Szczecin, the project is helping strengthen Poland’s offshore wind supply chain, develop expertise and create jobs. Baltic Power shows why maintaining a strong pipeline of projects is essential to capturing the full benefits of scale, unlocking investment, creating skilled jobs and strengthening Europe's offshore wind industry. We are proud to contribute to this important project, and I want to thank all the teams and partners who have helped bring Baltic Power to this stage – comments Henrik Andersen, CEO of Vestas.
For the installation campaign of 76 turbines, the project selected Cadeler as the main provider of installation vessels. Two jack-up vessels of M-class and O-class were used for this task, supported by multiple SOV vessels, service units, and crew transfer vessels.
We are pleased to have completed the installation of all 76 turbines at Baltic Power – Poland’s first offshore wind farm. This is an important milestone for the project and for the development of offshore wind in Poland. Projects of this scale require highly capable vessels, experienced teams, and close collaboration across the project. We are proud to have supported our client in reaching this milestone and look forward to building on our partnerships in Poland as the country's offshore wind industry continues to develop – comments Martin Gleerup, CEO of Cadeler.
Commissioning starts as soon as the turbine is installed. Starting with mechanical and electrical completion, which includes the interfaces to the foundations of low and high voltage systems, and High Voltage system commissioning of the turbine itself. The strings can be energized as soon as the relevant inter-array cables and sub-stations are ready to receive power. At this point, the turbines can be connected to the grid, after which the production systems are commissioned, and the turbine is put into a 240-hour trial operation. On successful completion of the trial operation, the turbines are handed over to the Operations and Maintenance team for ongoing service.
Since the beginning of the offshore construction campaign in early 2025, over 110 various vessels and over 7000 crew members, technicians and contractors have been mobilized for this task. This campaign had no precedence in Poland and required immense planning works, forward-thinking, coordination of simultaneous operations in challenging conditions. Lots of critical work is being performed by commissioning and permitting teams now, as almost 2500 assets need to undergo mandatory inspection, obtain certification and permits for use - comments Jens Poulsen, Senior Project Director and Board Member of Baltic Power.
Thanks to the sequential commissioning of turbine strings, Baltic Power wind farm has been able to deliver first energy to the national grid before the installation of all assets. In accordance with the national regulations, during the commissioning phase of a generation unit – that is, whilst the plant does not yet hold a generation license – the electricity generated may be sold on the energy markets, thereby enabling the generator to generate revenue under a special, time-limited license.
Baltic Power, developed by ORLEN and Northland Power is the most advanced offshore wind project in Poland and the first to commence offshore installations and production of energy. Once commissioning of the ~1,2 GW offshore wind farm is completed, up to 4 TWh of electricity. The farm is located approximately 23 km from the shore near Choczewo and Łeba, covering an area of 130 km2.

A historic milestone for offshore wind energy in Poland: at the Baltic Power farm a joint venture of ORLEN and Northland Power - the first turbines have successfully passed the required tests and supplied first offshore wind power to the national energy grid. Polskie Sieci Energetyczne confirmed the receipt of energy at the onshore substation in nearby Choczewo. More than 50 out of the 76 turbines are already installed at the offshore wind farm, and the installation campaign is scheduled to be completed later this year.
